I bet many students are curious to know that person, just so they can ask, “Why did you do this to us?” 😄

In my opinion, the creation of school system is not by the result of single inventor. Definitely, it has evolved over many centuries through the contributions of many scholars, ideas and changes through out the world.

However, there is one person who often credited with being the “Father of Modern Common School System”. ( even though many school systems already existed that time ). Any guess who?

Yes, he is Mr. Horace Mann (1796–1859). As the first Secretary of the Massachusetts Board of Education, Mann advocated for the establishment of free public schools accessible to all children, regardless of their socioeconomic background.

Historically, modern school systems (first schools) were started by the Sumerians in southern Mesopotamia.

Horace held several convictions regarding the provision of quality education to students:

  • He advocated for the allocation of public funds to support schools.
  • He emphasized the importance of keeping schools independent from religious affiliations.
  • He promoted the recruitment of adequately skilled and expert teachers.

He formulated modern school educational framework based on his fundamental principles, which underscored that every student should have access to an education, irrespective of their social background or class.

But, today the same education system facing a number of challenges, including:

  1. Inequality in access to education
  2. Outdated curriculum
  3. Lack of teacher training
  4. High dropout rates
  5. Too much focus on standardized testing

Moreover,

Education has devolved into a vehicle for money laundering, forsaking its role as a conduit for crafting a more promising future.

Undoubtedly, the modern educational system remains a work in progress, marked by its ongoing evolution. Yes, its not the perfect one. As a collective society and conscientious citizens, the onus rests upon us to enhance it ceaselessly.
